My name is Tavie and I’m a Khmerican living in Cambodia. I moved here from Colorado in 2012 to work for an NGO with a one year commitment. That one year came and went, and I’m still in Sihanoukville, but on a brand new adventure: motherhood.
One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was majoring in Anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I’m sure my parents would disagree with that, but something I didn’t anticipate when I was a freshman, hurrying to declare a major, was that using my education to study humans (“anthropology” literally means “study of humans” in ancient Greek) would let me live and work with my eyes and hands wide open, catching all of the incredible sights and experiences — good and bad — that I could. Professional skills come with time, but learning to study the world around me with a critical eye is what drove me to the other side of the world.
